ECHI shortlist

This section gives an overview of the ECHI shortlist indicators and provides access to all the indicator documentation sheets developed by the ECHIM experts in close cooperation with EC health indicator projects, DG Eurostat, DG SANCO, WHO and OECD. The latest version of the shortlist (June 2008) comprises 88 indicators

The documentation sheets show, for each indicator, the definition and data source that ECHIM experts currently consider to be the best available option. The decision whether a definition/source currently is the best has been made through a pragmatic weighting of different aspects such as methodological quality, data availability, burden for Member States if new/altered data collections would be needed, and political importance of the indicator topic

This implies that not all indicator definitions are flawless from a methodological perspective, and that there still will be room for (considerable) improvement of data quality for several shortlist indicators. Better data sources or advanced scientific insights may become available in future. These kinds of considerations are given in the documentation sheets

The ECHI shortlist is divided into an implementation section and a development section (by May 2010: 64 and 24 indicators, respectively). For the indicators in the implementation section consensus has been reached on the definition/source, and data availability is good or reasonable. For these indicators the documentation sheets have been worked out in detail. The indicators in the development section are considered not ready for implementation yet, as there still is a lot of developmental work needed on definitions and/or data collections. The documentation sheets for these indicators contain only general information about the indicator topic
